The mobile genres everyone underrates

July 6, 2026 · Lukas Vogel

Mobile stores push the same few genres hard, and it's easy to think that's all there is. But some of the best things I've played lately were quiet simulators and slow adventures that never trended.

Management sims like Skyport Tycoon fit phone sessions perfectly — you dip in, fix a mess, dip out. Calm adventures like Lantern Hollow are the opposite, meant for one long sitting, and both have a place.

Even puzzle games get dismissed as filler, but a well-built one like Wardens of Glass can out-think most big-budget releases. The trick is to look past the charts.

My advice: once a month, install something from a genre you normally skip. You'll be wrong about it at least half the time, and that's the fun part.
